We estimated existing grades by running a string parallel to, and level with, the addition foundation; by measuring from that horizontal datum down to the ground, we could construct a rough topographic plan without renting or buying some sort of self-leveling rotating laser device. The proposed excavation establishes a new grade for the final driveway surface to prevent cars from "bottoming out." The "Typical driveway section" shows two drain pipes (one perforated and one unperforated) beneath the 6x6 pressure-treated curb. A later curb design added two layers of pressure-treated 2x6 boards above the 6x6 curb.
