construction
We install the second "layer" of roof framing over the first plywood diaphragm. 2x8 joists are ripped in half at an angle to create sloping "rafters" that simultaneously provide a ventilation space above the roof insulation, while establishing a minimal 1/4" per foot slope for the roof membrane above.
construction
We carry the 3/4" tongue-and-groove plywood up to the roof, using the "hole" above the mezzanine level to help minimize the effort (left). The first row of the plywood substrate is in place (right).
construction
Finally, the entire roof deck substrate is finished.
construction
The roof will drain through an extended "scupper" photographed from the inside (left) and outside (right).
construction
Before putting the final plywood sheathing on the inside of the parapet walls, we need to engage the services of an electrician to wire in some parapet and stair lights.
construction
Shown here is the framing necessary to install the recessed parapet lights (left), and the openings in the outside sheathing for the two stair lights (right).
construction
A final note about rain: Ithaca set a new record for days of summer rain (49 such days in June, July August). Our attempts to use the big tarp to protect the wooden structure have been only partially successful; the black flexible drain pipe shown here (left) was used to remove pools of unwanted water that had "ponded" within the tarp structure during one of our heavy rains this week. The pipe was placed under the accumulated water in the tarp, the tarp was cut with a knife, and the water was safely drained into the lawn 30 feet below, as shown in the artist's conception (right). We'll be happy when the roof membrane is in place (scheduled for Sept. 20).
