Won't Come Back Anymore

Listen on Soundcloud | Watch on YouTube page

Written in 2010, I recorded this song on GarageBand software in 2011; I shot the video with my Flip camcorder, and edited it with Final Cut Express. The bits of TV were shot with the Flip from YouTube videos — pretty primitive. The song is meant to be a played in a sort of country/ bluegrass style, with lyrics that, at first glance, support a rather conservative point of view. At second glance, however, the words really are not about "holding on to it" (whatever "it" may be), but about the need to overcome the fear of change — in other words, exactly the opposite of what first appears to be the sentiment of the song. On the other hand, the lyrics suggest that, indeed, once you let go of it, it really won't come back anymore. And so this is therefore always an interesting — and sometimes scary — moment in life, when you stand at the threshold of personal change.

1. He's stroking her fine hair
Sitting on the couch with the playoffs on
She's thinking it's unfair
This wasn't something agreed upon

2. He's watching the halfback
Drive through the hole for the first score
She's trying to keep track
As his arm drops down and his hands explore

[v.2 pre-chorus] He says come on now
Just move a bit closer
Just move a bit closer or I'll be hurt
Yeah he says give it up
Just give it up
But this voice in her brain sounds the alert

[Chorus] It says hold onto it
Hold onto it
This is your life as you knew it before
Once you let go of it
What you know of it
Won't come back anymore

[Instrumental verse]
[Repeat v.2 pre-chorus] [Chorus]

[Bridge] But life is change that's just a fact
And when it does you can't look back
It's fourth and ten, he's down by two
Three minutes left: what should he do?

3. She's drawing that fine line
Somewhere in the sand right in front of his feet
He's taking his sweet time
You see he's not quite ready to admit defeat

[v.3 pre-chorus] And she says come on now
Just step across
Just step across that line or I'll be hurt
Yeah she says give it up
Just give it up
But this voice in his brain sounds the alert

[Chorus] [Chorus]
