Own Biggest Fan

I made two versions of this song: an acoustic, live version (left) — just me and my guitar, one mic, one take, recorded with GarageBand software June 1, 2012 and simultaneously videotaped with my low-resolution Flip camcorder — and an electric, "studio" version recorded July 6, 2012 (right) — well, it's still just a GarageBand demo — with the video also shot with my low-resolution flip camcorder, mostly perched on a second-floor window sill looking down upon me and my "fans."

VERSE 1
here's the basic strategy
work all day no time for rest
try to find some energy
to do what he does best

feels like he's in a dream
hiding behind his character mask
a valued member of the team
he's up to every task

CHORUS
he's his own biggest fan
and he's doing the best that he can
i can't say why others still haven't discovered him
why no one famous has wanted to cover him
he don't have a reason and he don't have a plan
he says "i am what i am...
"i'm my own biggest fan"

VERSE 2
he tells his friends about the shows
but they don't always have the time
still he sings the songs he knows
remembering every rhyme

people say he's pretty good
but just how good is hard to gauge
i think they'd tell him if they could
better start acting your age [chorus]

BRIDGE
no use pretending it's something that it isn't
ain't nobody out there who can turn you into something else
life with its twists and turns will never take you
where you cannot get to all by yourself

VERSE 3
how does he know if it's for real
writing words of wisdom on a page
don't seem to make these young girls squeal
he's not a star on a stage

don't know how he's gonna win
he never seems to reach the top
i wonder where he could begin
or if he should just stop [chorus]
